Army arrest 72-year-old man operating gun factory in Niger

The 102 Guards Battalion of the Nigerian Army has said that its men had arrested a 72-year-old man for allegedly operating a gun factory in Suleja, Niger State.

Public Relations Officer of the Battalion, Capt. Charles Ekeocha made the disclosure while briefing journalists in Suleja today, Tuesday.

Ekeocha stated that the gun factory was discovered by soldiers during a cordon and search operation at Paiko and Kache all in Niger State.

According to him 44 dane guns, three pistols, assorted weapons and different gun fabrication tools were recovered from the suspect whose name he did not disclose.

Ekeocha added that initial preliminary investigation by his men revealed that the suspect operates three other local guns factories located at Gwagwalada and Bwari, in the Federal Capital Territory.

He said the septuagenarian suspect and the exhibits would be handed over to the Department of State Security (DSS) for further investigation and prosecution

Ekeocha appealed to members of the public to always give timely and useful information to security agencies to assist them in stamping out crime and criminal elements from the society.

The suspect who spoke through an interpreter, said he had been in the gun making trade for about 45 years.

He however said his guns are usually sold to his customers, mainly hunters and members of vigilance groups for a price between N3000 and N5000 depending on the capacity of the guns.

"I sell my guns to anybody who comes around to buy. If I get out of this, I will not go back to the business", the suspect said.

He claimed to have a license to make the guns but added that the licensed had expired.
